College workers begin new round of rolling strikes

WORKERS in Scotland’s colleges have entered their second week of rolling strike action as their two-year pay dispute continues.

Teaching staff across Scotland’s college campuses last received a pay rise in April 2022. Since then, inflation has surged and there have renewed attempts to slash jobs in the sector as it wrestles with £32.7 million in funding cuts from the SNP-Green Scottish government’s latest budget.

College Employers Scotland’s Gavin Donoghue described the latest offer as final.

Striking City of Glasgow College lecturer Frances Curran told the Star: “We have been forced into taking strike action in nine out of the last 10 years.

“Every single year we are told there is no money for our pay demand. We take strike action and then more money is found.

“For the college bosses, this seems like just a game, and they seem willing to see students and workers suffer every time.

“Principals never have any problem finding the money to jet about the world or join their ‘gentlemen’s clubs.’

“It’s a farce, and long past time they put students, lecturers and education first.”
